Emily Kate (Katie) Bevan's background in visual arts provides the basis for her vision and practice as an emerging fashion designer. Skilled in all elements of fashion – including design, pattern making and sewing – Bevan is invested in the creation of unique, hand made garments, which combine a contemporary sensibility with a classic look. “My training as an artist really gave me a sense of confidence, a sense of freedom to explore, be inventive, and take into account the whole process of making as it relates to fashion,” says Bevan.
Attention to detail, versatility, and the challenge of resolving traditional elements with contemporary looks are Bevan's strong suits. “In my work I try to re-invigorate what I see as dying traditions and techniques. I'm interested in honoring that history and re-imagining it to fit today,” states Bevan, whose influences include couture designers from the 1930s and 1940s such as Madame Alix Gres and Elsa Schiaparelli, as well as contemporary designer Viviene Westwood. Bevan also takes inspiration from what she encounters everyday in the city, and feels motivated to create the kind of clothing that reflects her personal style and intuition.
Through experimental combination of colour, texture, and silhouette, Katie Bevan creates one-of-a-kind pieces that are feminine, sophisticated, and edgy. Her work appeals to young professional women who find luxury in fine details and quality.
Originally from North Bay, Ontario, Katie Bevan currently works and lives in Vancouver. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2005) from the University of Ottawa, and a Diploma in Fashion Design from the Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design (2008) in Vancouver.
